University –USA & Japan
University –difference between USA and Japan
To take a simple example, there are differences between American and Japanese college. Why did this idea occurred? Moreover, what is the best educational system? Comparing these two colleges, I am going to consider the better way of education.
First, how we enter the college? In USA, high school students have to prepare sending applications to college including GPA (Grade Point Average through high school), SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), Personal statement (Essay), letter of recommendation, FAFSTA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and so on. It seems that SAT is one of the important points because the criterion of GPA differs from country to country. Moreover, USA colleges see not only tests, but also students action – what did them do in society. In addition, students in USA have interviews. What they need to do especially is experiencing extracurricular activities. On the other hand, Japanese students have to go to college and take some examinations such as the national center test for university admissions and university entrance examination which you can take when you pass on the center test. The fact that students in Japan submit applications to university is similar to the university in USA. However, for Japanese students, the most important thing is the score on the tests.
Second is the contrast with the lives in school. College students in USA do not need to choose their major immediately: they do it by the time they become third grader. This means that students are able to learn various subjects. More things they study, more ways they can go in the future. Students who discover what they are eager to study, they go to graduate school and begin further studying. Therefore, it is not too much to say that education in USA has flexibility. Furthermore, students lead classes: teachers is not main person in the classes. Students discuss actively, and teachers help them. There is obligation that students evaluate teachers. These system raise person who act voluntarily. College students in Japan select their specialty after entering school. They study hard and expand their critical skills on certain department. In evaluation system for teacher, it is already built as well as USA, yet it has not expanded efficiently. What is more, except seminar classes, professors mainly leads classes: students have passive acceptance.
