Japnese English Skills
Why Japanese people are struggling with
Speaking in English?
Rika Manabe
English is the most common language all over the world. These days, many people can speak English very well except Japanese people. If you look at the TOEFL score, the average score in Japan is 70. However, if you look at the other developing countries in Asia, like India or Malaysia, they have 89 to 91 as their average score. For some reasons, Japanese people are struggling with speaking or communicating in English. Then, I came up with these two ideas, the age they start learning English and different personalities in Japan and other countries. Because of these two reasons, I think Japanese people are not very good at using English.
First, I would like to focus on the age we first learn English in Japan and in Thailand. In Japan, we are required to learn English since we enter junior high schools, which is 12 years old. They teach us in a logical way and it makes us more difficult to understand. It is really like studying. On the contrast, in Thailand, they start learning English since right after they enter elementary schools, which is 6 years old. Since they have to make children understand well, they teach them in an easy way. This makes children even more fun. In addition, according to Koro Suzuki, an associate professor in Kochi University, they teach some other subjects like mathematics in English.
Next, I am going to see the different personalities of Japanese and some other countries in South East Asia. Usually, Japanese are incoming people or shy and care about what we are thought to be. We are afraid of making mistakes and we are not confident in ourselves. However, people in South Asia are more outgoing and they tell us what they are thinking about. I have some friends from South East Asia and everyone was really outgoing and said their opinion. They are not afraid of making mistakes. I believe that everything will improve by making mistakes. Even if their grammar is not correct, they try to speak anyway and this make them speak English well.
Because of these two reasons, the age we start learning English and personalities, I believe that Japanese are not good at speaking in English. However, there is a similarity between these countries. That is we will definitely have many opportunities to use English. As I have mentioned at first, English is the most common language all over the world. Since every countries are becoming global more and more, we will certainly have many chances to communicate in English. When we work together outside of Japan, the language everyone usually uses is English.
