The Reality of Labor in Fukushima
As everyone knows, Japan had a big earthquake on March 11th, 2011. People all had deep sorrow. Four years have passed since then; however, not a few people still suffer from that disaster. Moreover, a great number of people work at Fukushima nuclear power stations even now. The reality of this will be discussed in this essay. Their employment, the management, and the solution.
First, their employment method is terrible. The Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said "The situation is under control" and "Pollution is blocked perfectly” in an International Olympic Committee general meeting in 2013. Actually, it will take a great many years to dissolute Fukushima nuclear power plant and eliminate radiation. Thus, there is not enough employees at all. After his speech, the government hurried up the pace of the convergence and the decommission of their work, and tried to make the cost cheaper. There was pressure to overwork labor. Since the Japanese nuclear power plant clean up started, it consistently uses a multiple subcontractor structure. Therefore some issue have come up such as camouflage contracts, illegal dispatch, and nonpayment are normally performed. According to Newsphere (2013), this illegal dispatch concerns gangsters. They hire debtors and homeless, and soon dismiss them after radiation exposure. The police estimate that fifty gangsters hire 1050 workers. Some of them have no insurance and no health control. Lots of people work in such severe conditions.
Secondly, the management is poor. On February 20, 2014 all over and about hundred tons of high concentration pollution water flowed into the sea from a tank. All nuclides included in strontium 90 as much as 40,020,000 Becquerel per 1 liter. The pollution is going to be spread about 870 square meters off site and run after by removal operation of polluted soil by a site. This trouble seems to be caused by operation mistake of worker's; however, most of the various troubles are the responsibility of the management. The manager cannot explain with correct directions. As Mikiko Watanabe (2014) argued, although to make the schedule of the work is one of the essential parts of the work, the managers do not know the reality of the site. Because of this, the worker’s opinion cannot be accepted by the managers. This is a problem of the management.
